Multi-Lingual Processing Overview

STORIS supports the following languages for processing:

1. English

2. Spanish

3. French

4. Alternate (for an alternate form of a language, for example a dialect).

English is the default language.  To process in Spanish, French, or Alternate, you must

1. translate all or part of the system into the selected language using the Translation Tool,

2. grant user access to the translated text via the Language Code fields in the User and User Group files, and

3. set up your computer system to accept the extra-English characters required by Spanish and French.

STORIS Domains

To make the translation process manageable, the Translation Tool separates STORIS into the following "domains", any of which you can translate at any time.  Note that you can also "re-translate" domains at a later time, electing to include all data in a domain, or only data that has not yet been translated.

Activating Multi-Lingual Processing for Users

To make translated portions of STORIS available to your users, use the User Group file for the menu domain and the User file for all other domains. Each of these files has a Language Code field providing access to the four language options listed above.  

First, create a user group, then select the menu options you want to make available to the users in the group.  Finally, use the Language Code field to select the language.  When a user in this group logs on, the system displays the selected menus in the selected language.  

In the same way, use the Language Code field in the User file to select a processing language for individual users. For example, if you select Spanish for a user, whenever that user logs on, any portions of the system that have been translated into Spanish display in that language.

 During normal operation, if STORIS does not find a translation in the selected processing language, it uses the English default. In cases where the item is user-defined (for example, the Description field for a product) and a translation is not found, the system searches down the language hierarchy (see above, "1-2-3-4") for an entry. If none is found, the item is left blank.  

Multi-Lingual Processing is also available for the Report Builder and the Forms Designer.  You select a language within these programs.  The language selections you make within these programs apply only to each program, and they override the language selections you make in the User and User Group files.  

The STORIS Online Help file is available only in English.  

Description Fields

Most Description fields have an associated Action button via which you specify one or more alternate translations of the Description field.
