STORIS uses a FIFO policy for picking products from inventory. The system searches for the storage location containing products entered into inventory first. The only exception to this rule is for exchange pickups, for which the Pick Exchange Pickups First field in the Warehouse Management tab of the Barcode Control Settings allows to override the FIFO policy.
STORIS also offers a Priority Picking feature where you can specify the storage locations from which you want to pick first, and a Picking Zone feature where you can designate certain storage locations as priority picking zones, then specify picking sequences for the zones based on the order type (for example, delivery or take-with). The system applies the picking methods in the following order:
Priority Picking
Picking Zones
FIFO
If you pick a piece from inventory but then have to "re-rack" the piece (that is, return it to inventory), you must first remove the piece from picking and then perform a bin-to-bin transfer to return the piece to its proper storage location. Otherwise, if you pick the item again and print a ticket, then when you scan the ticket an error message will appear and you cannot process the item.
With Priority Picking, you can specify the storage locations from which you want to pick first. To activate the Priority Picking feature, use the Priority Pick For field on the Merchandise tab in the Warehouse/Store Location Settings. You activate the feature for one or more of the following order types:
Deliveries
Transfers
Customer Pick-Ups
That is, if you select Deliveries and Transfers, then for each delivery or transfer order, the system searches the stock location specified on the order for storage locations set up for Priority Picking. To designate a storage location for Priority Picking, use the Priority Picking field in the Tracked Storage Location Settings.
Use picking zones to apply picking sequences to selected storage locations. For each storage location, you can assign a picking zone (zone 1, 2, or 3) to the storage location. Each zone can include multiple storage locations. You assign picking zones to storage locations in the Tracked Warehouse Location Verification Settings (or in the Storage Location Settings), and you specify the picking sequences in the Picking By Zone Assignment Window in the Warehouse/Store Location Settings. You can apply picking sequences to the following order types:
Deliveries
Transfers
Customer Pick-Ups
Take-Withs
For each order type, you can specify a picking sequence (for example, 321 or 213). If the product is stored in more than one storage location and the locations have picking zones assigned, then the system searches the first location in the sequence for inventory. If none is found, the system searches the next location, and so on.
For example, assume you want to set up storage locations A, B, and C in location 99 to use the picking zones feature. Your only concern at this point is, for deliveries, to pick from the storage location closest to the dock. Storage location A is closest to the dock, location C is farthest. You assign the following:
picking zone 1 assigned to storage location A
picking zone 2 assigned to storage location B
picking zone 3 assigned to storage location C
Then, at the Deliveries field on the Picking By Zone Assignment Window, you enter 123. This tells the system to pick from zone 1 first. If zone 1 is out of stock on the product (or becomes out of stock in the process), the system looks to zone 2, etc.
The result is that for all delivery orders with 99 in the Stock Location field, the system checks line by line for products on the order stored in locations A, B, or C and picks them based on the specified picking sequence. In our case, its the picking sequence described above (that is, location A first, then B, then C).
