Label Matrix Overview

STORIS provides several routines you can use to print product labels and hang tags using Zebra printers. Zebra printers are thermal printers designed specifically for printing labels and hang tags. If you want to print labels and/or hang tags to other printer types (for example, laser printers), you must either use the Forms Designer or install Label Matrix® onto each PC from which you want to print Label Matrix labels. Of course, you can also use Label Matrix to create labels for Zebra printers. For more information, see also the topic called Creating Labels in Label Matrix, and the FAQ named "How Do I Create Labels in Label Matrix?".

Storage Folders for Label Matrix Files

STORIS comes delivered with a directory structure set up to store Label Matrix files.  The directory structure depends on your operating system:

If using Windows® XP®:

\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\STORIS\Label Matrix

If using Windows Vista® or Windows 7®:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Storis\Label Matrix

The directories contain folders for each of the five label types.  Each folder contains a sample label.

You use these folders to store the label templates you create in Label Matrix. If you a create label template in Label Matrix, you must store it in the proper folder or STORIS will not find it. For example, if you run the Print a Bar Code Floor Tag routine, the system looks in the Barcode Tags folder for label templates, so you must store your bar code tag templates there. This is especially important when creating new labels. When you finish creating a label, make sure you save and store it in the proper folder.

Sample Labels

Within each of the above folders, STORIS provides a sample label template representing the particular label type stored in the folder. As you will see, these sample labels are very important, particularly when setting up your STORIS system to print Label Matrix labels. Below is a list of sample files and the directories in which they reside.

Database Files

After installing Label Matrix on your PC, the first time you print any of the above label types, the system creates a ‘database’ file (actually, a .csv spreadsheet file) which it uses to store the data from the products you selected for label print. The system stores the new file in the appropriate folder (for example, stores the accessory label database file in the Accessories folder), then overwrites this file with new data each time you print that type of label in the future.

After you create database files (.csv) for each of the three label/tag types, each of the three storage folders should contain one .csv file. The following is a list of the database files, and the folders in which they reside:

When you create a database file, the system also creates and stores some incidental files in the folder. Leave these files as they are.

As-Is Products

Important!  For as-is (also known as non-saleable) products, STORIS uses separate databases and label templates. You must perform the above procedure to create an additional database file for each label/tag type. You can use the existing sample label for this purpose.

Setting Up STORIS to Print Label Matrix

Your first step after installing Label Matrix is to print the sample labels STORIS provides – one for each label/tag type. Printing the sample labels not only shows you what simple labels look like, but also performs the important function of creating the individual database files STORIS uses to store data selected for label/tag printing.

To initialize all three tag/label types, run the following routines using the instructions below, printing the sample label provided by STORIS.

Important!  Make sure you close Label Matrix before printing labels/tags from STORIS. Otherwise, an error message appears and you cannot print.

Printing a Sample Label Using the Print an Inventory Floor Tag Routine

On the first screen of the label/tag printing routines, you specify the selection criteria that identifies the products for which you want to print labels/tags (in our example below, one product for a print quantity of one). You also specify the print method and label type you want to print. Enter the following responses at the following fields. At the remaining fields, accept the default responses.

  1. At the Product field, enter a product code.

  2. At the Quantity field, enter a print quantity of 1.

  3. At the Label Type field, choose to print either labels or tags.

  4. At the Print Method field, select Label Matrix. The PC File Name Field activates.

  5. At the PC File Name field, click on the Action button . The PC Directory Search window appears. Note the directory name in the window. It should reflect the label type you specified at the Label Type field (the directory path may be partially cut off if it is too long).

  6. In the grid, double-click on the sample label that appears in the grid (the file name begins with “samp…”). You return to the main screen.

  7. Click on Run. STORIS sends the job to the printer.

Printing a Sample Label Using the Print a Bar Code Floor Tag Routine

The process for printing a sample bar code floor tag is identical to the process described above, except that

STORIS then sends the job to the printer.
