Set Up Terminal Server for a Printer

(Term Server/Printer Setup)

Access

Terminal Server Setup

Use this routine to set up a terminal server by assigning an IP address and a host name and entering the total number of ports available through that server.

The IP address enables the terminal server to communicate with the main UNIX server required by the STORIS system, and this in turn provides the communication path between the terminal server and peripheral devices such as printers.  After you set up a terminal server, you can assign a printer to it, making that printer available for use within the STORIS system. For details on setting up a printer, see the following section on Printer Setup O/S.

If you click on Install a Terminal Server on AIX or SCO, then click on the Run button, you access a screen from which you can choose one of the following terminal servers:

  1. Systech

  2. Digi Port Server

  3. IBM 7318 S20

  4. Lantronix

  5. Xyplex 416

  6. other TERMINAL SERVER not listed

  7. Exit

After you specify a terminal, you must enter the IP address and host name. Then enter the number of available ports. If all the information is correct, enter Y to complete the terminal server setup. To abort the process, enter N.

Printer Setup O/S

Use this option to

  1. add a printer on an existing terminal server or

  2. add a UNIX queue, either AIX or SCO.

If you choose Add a Printer or UNIX Queue on AIX or SCO, a screen appears from which you have the following options.

  1. Adding a printer on an existing TERMINAL SERVER

  2. Adding a UNIX QUEUE

  3. Exit

If you choose option 1 to add a printer to an existing terminal server, the system prompts you to enter an IP address. You can enter the IP address of the terminal server to which the printer is being assigned . Or if you enter a question mark (?), a file displays that you can use to resolve a hostname into an IP address.  To abort the process, enter q.

After you enter a valid IP address, the system displays the available number of ports on this terminal server along with the type of terminal server configured at this address.  Prompts then appear requesting you enter a printer name and a port number.

To confirm that all entries are correct, enter Y. To abort the process, enter N.

UNIX Printer

To create a UNIX printer, enter 2 at the Enter your Choice field on the Printer Menu screen.  The series of prompts that follows depends on whether the UNIX operating system you are using (AIX or SCO).

If the UNIX system is AIX, the following prompts appear.

  1. A printer name (for example, lp100, lp200, etc.)

  2. A UNIX Queue name (for example,  f0).

  3. A (Y)es or (N)o answer to the question, “Is this Queue for CHECKS, AP CHECK REGISTER or BARCODE LABELS?”

  4. A confirmation that the PRINTERNAME (for example, lp200) and the QUEUE NAME (for example, f0) are correct.  An entry of (Y)es completes the setup of a UNIX printer.  An entry of (N)o aborts the entire process.

If the UNIX system is SCO, a different sequence of prompts appears.

After you enter 2 at the Enter your Choice prompt on the Printer Menu screen, the Remote Printing Configuration window appears. Use this window to enter information for remote printers or local printers accepting remote printing requests.

Enter the printer name in the proper format, for example, "lpl_l4".  The prefix "lp1" tells the system that the printer is line printer #1;  the suffix "14" tells the system that the associated port of the terminal server is port #14.  Similarly, a printer name of "lp2_15" refers to line printer #2, which is connected to port #15 of the terminal server.

After you enter the printer name, the following prompt appears.

Is {printer name} a remote printer or a local printer (r/l)?

Enter R. That is, Systech printers and terminal server printers are attached via the network to the STORIS system, so they are always remote.

Next, the following prompt appears:

Please enter the name of the remote host that {host name} is attached to:

At this prompt, enter the remote host name (for example, systech1) or the remote host’s IP address (for example, 190.190.190.12).

The next prompt asks for confirmation. If you are satisfied with all your entries, enter Y.

When the system asks whether extended RLP protocol should be turned on, enter N. STORIS does not use this protocol. When the system asks would you like this to be the system default printer, enter N. This completes the printer configuration.
