File Join Assistant

Access

Use the File Join Assistant to add dictionaries from one source file to another. For example, the 'Order' source file contains dictionaries relating to sales orders. If you want your sales order report to include the Warehouse Location dictionary, you can use the File Join Assistant to add that dictionary to the list of dictionaries associated with the 'Order' file.

You access the File Join Assistant via the Maintain Report Dictionaries routine. To add a dictionary to another source file, perform the following steps:

  1. At the File Name field, specify the source file to which you want to add an external dictionary. The list of dictionaries currently in the source file appears in the grid.

  2. At the Dictionary Name field, specify a new and unique name for the dictionary you want to add to the source file. If you specify the name of a STORIS original dictionary, an error message appears when you attempt to access the File Join Assistant. In the next step, the system copies the dictionary you want to add, gives this name to the copy, and thus retains the integrity of the original dictionary.

  3. Click on the Actions button at the bottom of the screen and choose File Join Assistant from the menu that appears. The File Join Assistant screen appears on the screen.

  4. In the Join File Name field, specify the source file that contains the dictionary you want to add to the original source file (in our example, the original source file is the ‘Order’ file). A list of eligible source files appears in the grid. Double-click on the desired source file.

After you select your secondary source file, the name of the file appears in the Join File Name field and the Join File Field Name field becomes active. If you click on the arrow next to this field, a list of eligible dictionaries from the secondary source file appears. Click on the dictionary you want to join to the original source file, then click Save to exit the File Join Assistant and return to the Maintain Report Dictionaries screen. Information on the dictionary you selected appears on the screen along with the dictionary name you created earlier. Make any desired changes, the click Add. The system adds the dictionary to the list in the grid (in alphabetical order). The dictionary you created is now a permanent part of the original source file. You can use it in any Report Builder report.

To maintain data integrity during the Create a Report process, STORIS places restrictions on certain key dictionaries. That is, you may not be able to select from all dictionaries at all times. STORIS also restricts the availability of source files to those with a "relation" to the original source file you choose, for example a source file with a common dictionary.
